Whether you are 18 or 98, a change in your life may require thinking about modifying your home. Wider doorways, ramps, hands-free lighting & window treatments, and more.

It seems like a few times a year clients ask me if they should make the modifications or move. As you would expect, it depends – and the biggest thing determining that decision (in my opinion) is what the client prefers to do. That’s right, every decision isn’t based on resale value. Still, it’s something to consider so an informed decision can be made.

Generally speaking, wider doors, walk-in showers, voice-activated blinds and those sorts of things are selling points for *everyone*. Other modifications – a stair lift for example – may not be a preference for most buyers. But would it help the client? Then maybe it’s the right choice. After all, stair lifts can be removed, sold or marketed as an option to convey when marketing the home.

A good starting point to find info in one place is the American Association of Retired Person’s (AARP) “Veterans and Military Families”  group. Their Home Modifications Benefits Guide is a smart place to direct them.
